Semantic Search + Social Networking = BAAGZ

Posted by admin on Nov 8, 2007 in Featured, Search, Social Network, Start-ups

baggs.PNGEver wondered what a collaborative social network site might look like? Yes, we know that is pretty much the definition of every social network out there, but this one looks to be a little different from it’s older brothers.

BAAGZ makes good use of the Search By Serendipity technology that currently powers exalead.com. Essentially it is a form of social site that represents the first live network of shared interests. These shared interests are characterized by the public content contained within individual folders, called “baagz”. These act as shortcuts to  favourite Web sites, articles, pictures, videos, RSS feeds and notes.

The site uses its semantic description of every Web site stored in a baag to  determine what a given baag is about - whether or not a given Web site is specifically tagged by baagerz. The system then uses this knowledge about every baager to connect him or her to other baagerz with shared interests. The ability to immediately notify baagerz when something new and exciting appears on the network is the pulse of BAAGZ.

The most exciting bit as far as we are concerned is the feature where users can watch their own baagz evolve and grow through contributions from others on the BAAGZ network, as well as those they have subscribed to that are managed by other BAAGZ users. As a result, users have a visual, interactive real-time content feed on their BAAGZ homepage and have an exciting environment to learn about their favourite hobbies and interests from other experts and fans around the Web. Think of it as being like a more lively reddit perhaps?

To us, this sounds like any other bookmarking service, but giving it a test drive is the only way to know for sure. We were approached by BAAGZ with a selection of invite codes to the private beta. As such we are going to have a longer review for you in the near future, but for now if you want to get your hands on one of the few codes we have simply leave a comment below. The first 5 people to comment with a viewpoint plus the words “BAAGZy me an INVITE” will get one of the invites via email from us. We are nice like that.
